Andrea Mannberg is a Professor of Economics at the School of Business and Economics and at CARE – Centre for Avalanche Research and EducationUiT – The Arctic University of Tromsø (Norway). Her research focuses on why people voluntarily expose themselves to risk, particularly in situations where potential consequences may be severe or fatal and the perceived benefits of taking additional risks are small.

Her passion for backcountry skiing brought her to Tromsø in 2015, where she began concentrating her research on decision-making and risk-taking behaviour in avalanche terrain. Together with psychologist Audun Hetland, she founded the CARE – Centre for Avalanche Research and Education at UiT. The centre’s core objective is to better understand human decision-making in so-called “wicked learning environments”, such as avalanche terrain, and to explore how decision quality can be improved in order to reduce accidents.
